“Everyone showed up not just to play basketball. We showed up to make a difference.” – Christian Milteer
On a cool October Saturday morning in Roswell, the sound of basketballs bouncing mixed with laughter and music at Hembree Park. Hoops for Hunger was in full swing — a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and food drive created by 15-year-old Christian Milteer to support North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC).
Organized through The Empowerment Workshop, founded by Christian’s mother, Le’Dor Milteer, the event brought together high school students, families, and neighbors connected by one purpose: to help fight hunger in our local community.
Christian shared that the idea came from wanting to give back to those who have supported him along his basketball journey. “People have always supported me throughout my basketball career,” he said. “I realized I should give back to the community.”
At NFCC, stories like Christian’s remind us what it looks like when compassion meets action. Every can of food collected that day helps keep our pantry stocked and provides nourishment for local families who might otherwise go without. Each gesture of generosity, no matter how small, builds toward our shared vision of a community where every neighbor flourishes.
Each day, NFCC provides food and essentials to nearly 200 households across North Fulton. As the weather cools and the holiday season approaches, the need grows, and so does the opportunity for kindness.
We are continually inspired by neighbors like Christian who show that caring has no age limit. When one person takes initiative, others follow, and the impact ripples outward from one basketball court to an entire community.
This fall and winter, we’re reflecting on moments like this, when generosity becomes connection and a shared act of giving brings hope to those who need it most. Whether you choose to host a food drive, donate warm coats, volunteer your time, or make a financial gift, your involvement strengthens our community.
Because when community steps up, everyone is supported.
