Today, we are honored to share the story of Manny, nominated by Becky Pappalardo, Education Manager, and Wynona Kuehl, Vice President of Client Programs.
Manny left high school at 17.
At the time, his family needed support, and he believed the best way he could help was by going to work. Over the years, he worked long days in the tree removal industry, eventually becoming a foreman responsible for leading crews and managing major responsibilities on the job.
But even while building a career, part of him still wanted to finish what he started.
In 2021, Manny watched his sister enroll in NFCC’s GED program and earn her diploma. Inspired by her example, he enrolled too. Soon, he encouraged his brother, cousin, and a friend to join the program alongside him.
His brother and friend graduated before he did.
Meanwhile, Manny was balancing 12-hour workdays while trying to study and complete his final exam. It would have been easy to put the dream aside again.
But after attending his brother’s graduation ceremony at NFCC earlier this year, something shifted.
Becky shared: “He decided it was time.”
Manny took a day off work, sat for his final test, and on May 6, 2026, he earned his GED.
Now, he’s exploring welding programs and thinking about what comes next for his future.
Stories like Manny’s are why NFCC’s Adult Education programs matter so deeply. Behind every GED earned is someone choosing to believe that new opportunities are still possible.
