Volunteer Spotlight: Darren Freeman, Financial Coaching

When a struggling neighbor comes to NFCC seeking emergency financial assistance, our first goal is to ensure their basic needs are met and they remain safe in their home. Next, we help them take steps to increase their financial stability and build a stronger future through classes, workshops and coaching opportunities.

That’s where Darren Freeman comes in. Darren, a recently retired IT professional, has a passion for helping families manage their finances more effectively and efficiently. He has helped guide many families over the past 20 years and currently volunteers as a financial coach and workshop leader for NFCC.

“It truly is rewarding working with clients to help stabilize lives and establish financial goals,” says Darren.

Darren works to demystify the concept of a budget for individuals and families.

“One of the precepts I always tell my clients is that it will take time…I always refer to a quote from Ron Blue who says, ‘Spend less than you make, and do it for a long time.’ The simplicity of that quote may seem obvious, but practically in life, it may not be as obvious,” says Darren.

Clients who sign up for financial coaching often feel overwhelmed by their situation, so Darren gives them space to talk about their feelings toward finances and budgeting.

He often hears people say:

I feel like I’m losing ground, but I just don’t know what to do.

I want to save but I have nothing in my accounts to do so.

Dealing with finances is so depressing.

“As I explored these impressions with a client, my first step is to help them understand the current landscape of their financial position. We spend multiple weeks getting our arms around that,” says Darren.

Next, Darren helps them identify changes they can make to reduce the financial bleeding. Eventually, Darren works with them to create a roadmap for the future.

“This is not a sprint but a marathon, but the run becomes easier to manage when there is a stated goal in front of you and you can see and celebrate small wins as you go along,” says Darren.

“Even when a client has a lot to do to reach their goals, they are no longer fearful and depressed but have hope because the mountain is slowly chipping to a molehill.”
